Special Effects

The use of special effects – eg lasers, haze / smoke machines, strobe lighting, and pyrotechnics of any kind, or bringing into any Outernet London event space any explosive or flammable substance is only permitted with the prior written consent of the Outernet Safety Team and Event Director.

In order to use any special effect, we require the following information to be included in your event safety pack (see also Health and Safety):

  • Summary of activity
  • Operator’s contact details, and relevant training, qualifications, experience
  • Number of staff present from special effects contractor ie staffing numbers should be in line with activity
  • Schedule including demonstration / rehearsal dates and times
  • Equipment specifications including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDF) and COSHH assessments where relevant
  • Plan of display area including positioning of special FX kit, positioning of operators, and details of emergency stops. For the avoidance of doubt, ALL special effects MUST have emergency stops.

LPG cylinders (butane, propane etc) for event purposes are not permitted anywhere at Outernet London. Small gas cylinders which are integral to the operation of any special effects only are permitted.

There is no restriction on the use of inert gases within the Outernet London’s event spaces but usage and storage must be adequately addressed in your event safety pack. Untethered gas bottles eg CO2 are not permitted.

Pyrotechnics must be installed at the latest point practical prior to your event activation going live and a full demonstration firing will be required. Rigging pyrotechnics prior to the day your event activation goes live is not permitted, nor are pyrotechnics allowed to be left in any event space overnight.

Confetti and flutterfetti are permitted. Both are only to be operated using compressed CO2. Glitter is not permitted. Please note: where confetti or flufferfetti usage is agreed, a screens ‘burn-off’ (to minimise static build-up) after the evening closure of the relevant event space will be required, at the client’s cost.

Explosives (or cartridge operated fixing tools) are not permitted without the prior written approval of the Outernet London Safety Team.

Use of haze, smoke and dry ice are subject to approval on a case-by-case basis. Oil based haze machines will not be approved.

Lasers – diffracted beams are permitted, subject to appropriate documentation and demonstration. All lasers must have emergency stops.
